What Burning Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Taught Me….

Today was one of those days in motherhood that was just down right hard. Momma’s, I know you all have had those days!

Months and months of sleepless nights have piled up. My baby is struggling through teething and I hate to see him in so much pain! Let’s be honest, shards of bone breaking through tender flesh is not fun for anyone!! Today, I had moments where I lost my patience and used an unkind and unwarranted tone with my sweet babies.  I burned the grilled cheese sandwiches while I was trying to console an over tired, teething baby.  My perfectionistic tendencies really took a blow…..I DO NOT Burn food! Of course this wasted 4 pieces of bread and 3 slices of cheese, not to mention what little energy reserves I was using.

These were not my most Properly Stylish moments but, they happened.

It’s funny how burning a grilled cheese sandwich can send you into a self deprecating tail spin of feeling inadequate. I immediately began to see all of the ways that I do not measure up as a mother and wife.  As I was spiraling  out of control in my thoughts, Stella was encouraging me in her sweet little way.

Stella : “Oh mom, you burned the grilled cheese. It’s ok! You can make another and next time turn the fire down and watch it very closely. Wow! My tummy is growling so loudly…I must be realllllllly hungry.”

I both laughed and cried listening to her. I took a deep breath, told myself “I AM enough,” and began to prepare the second round of sandwiches.

As women, we are often times juggling many responsibilities and trying to excel at every one. We leave very little room for failure or acting in any way that is less than perfect. The truth of the matter is that none of us are perfect and never will be! It’s an unattainable trait that we try so desperately to achieve. I would never want Stella or Liam to feel the pressure to be perfect in anything they do. As a matter of fact, I tell Stella very often that her best efforts are enough and she never has to feel like she has to be “perfect.”

Parenting can be the best teacher and failing can be one of the greatest gifts! Both require us to strive to be the best version of ourselves!

With both babes on my lap, I apologized for losing my patience and burning the grilled cheese sandwiches. Stella immediately said those beautiful words that set us free and give us room to grow, “I FORGIVE YOU mommy and I LOVE YOU even though you burned the grilled cheese!” Forgiveness is such a beautiful gift!  All was well!

As I prepared the second batch of sandwiches with a crying babe on my hip, I gave myself permission to fail. I gave myself permission to have a less than spotless home, to sleep in my makeup and have messy hair, to not always have the perfect meals prepared with the best ingredients, and to fail without it defining who I am.

I want to be a positive example for my babies. I realized that striving for perfection does not set a realistic example for them. Thank you God for grace and forgiveness!

What truly matters is that my family feels and sees the love I have for them.

Even though I am enormously flawed, I am enough in this moment!

I hope my challenging day encourages you! You are doing a wonderful job and you are so loved!

Lunch may have started black, crusty and undesirable but it ended up pretty fantastic! Oh the lessons we learn!

It’s HOT Again…in October!

Well, no surprise! It’s hot again, in October….in the South, at least! If you’re anything like me you are rummaging through your closet looking for something to wear! Looking for an outfit that can keep you warm and cool at the same time, while looking Properly Stylish can prove to be a challenge!  May I suggest an easy ensemble perfect for girl’s night out or a date with the hubby?

This little number has a lot of edge! Try pairing a comfy sweater with an edgy skirt and killer shoes! Don’t forget the clutch and jewelry! Leave the tights at home and show a little skin. The sweater will keep you cozy and showing a little leg is just the right amount of sexiness to keep your man wanting more! 🙂

If you style is more simplistic, opt for a simple sweater to go over a simple dress. Accessories are everything with this ensemble! Have a little fun with a statement necklace and a pair of neutral wedges. Neutral colors keep this outfit clean and classic!

Dust off that tulle skirt….I know you all have one lying around!

Tulle Skirt + Sweater = High End Style

The tulle skirt is the lead role in this ensemble. So, keep the sweater and shoes simple (nude pumps would be perfect)! This look is great for a fancy dinner and a night at the theatre!

I will be pulling out my own version of this outfit for a night out with the hubby! I would love to hear all about your night out in this ensemble…..do share!!

LOVE is the Most Stylish Accessory….

Today’s Post is simply about LOVE!

“LOVE is patient, LOVE is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrong. LOVE does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It ALWAYS protects, ALWAYS trusts, ALWAYS hopes, ALWAYS perseveres.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

We all have had life experiences where LOVE has truly been tested. If we were all perfect, we would embody the above verse with ease…….just a reminder, we are human and often times struggle in this area. In some cases we are too overcome with our own pain to LOVE others in spite of what they may have done to us. I have struggled many, many times in my life when choosing to LOVE! But, I encourage you to LOVE and LOVE hard! There is so much hate and ugliness in the world. You can choose to take part in the hate and the ugly….in my experiences, it really only produces more hate and ugly. Or you can choose to Create LOVE, Give LOVE, and Be LOVE!

We all have so much to be thankful for! Even if our situations are unimaginable, there is always someone out there who’s situation is worse. I’m not trying to down play anyone’s circumstances, but I’m hoping to encourage you in the midst of your circumstances. We all need a good “ugly” cry….you know what I’m talking about! I say have a good cry and then pick yourself up, count your blessings and choose to LOVE! LOVE truly conquers all…..even the worst of all evils!

(Please insert any cheesy, cliche Love statement here)

Ok…..hope you are feeling the LOVE! Now get out there and

CREATE LOVE, BE LOVE, & GIVE LOVE…..It’s sooo Properly Stylish!

B. Blessed,

Wendy

Loving yourself…NAKED!

LOVING YOURSELF….NAKED!

Let me start this post by saying….I know this is a touchy subject, but we ALL  have different body image issues. There are areas on you’re body you love and a few parts you would like to trade in for a newer or different version. I have my own struggles with my body image, if I’m being transparent.  As an actress/model, I’m being interviewed (auditioning) daily for jobs and a large part of the process concerns my appearance. Am I pretty enough, Am I too pretty, Am I small enough, Are my breasts large enough, and the list goes on……..this is a constant for me! So, please believe me when I say, “I understand the struggles of a poor body image.”

Since having my little girl 19 months ago, I have made a huge effort to accept myself, lumpy thighs and all (I like to think those lumps add a little character, being perfect is sooooo boring :))! I do not want her to struggle with a poor body image. Therefore, I was forced to get my act together and love myself NAKED!

We are bombarded with media images of how we “should or should not” look. Men and women are constantly being scrutinized about their body’s. I say ENOUGH! Do not put your time and energy into these things. Instead let’s put our energies into positive things….Like LOVING ourselves for who we are!

Let’s start by loving yourself right where you are, at this moment. Check yourself out in the mirror…make a mental note of the things you love about yourself and also those things you would like to change. It’s so important to concentrate on the positives and not on the negatives…..focusing on negativity only produces more negativity! I say acknowledge those things you would like to change and create a game plan on how you are going to change them. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water, and exercise …give your body what it needs to great! Let’s be PROactive!

10 STEPS TO A POSITIVE BODY IMAGE:

1. Appreciate all that your body can do! The body is an amazing instrument!

2. Keep a top-10 list of things you like about yourself! Post them on your mirror and look at them daily.

3. Remind yourself that “True Beauty” is not simply skin deep…..Beauty is a state of mind, not a state of body.

4. Embrace yourself from the inside out!

5. Surround yourself with positive people and those who challenge you to achieve personal greatness!

6. Shut down those voices in your head that tell you your body is not “right” or that you are “not enough.” Replace those negative thoughts with positive ones!

7. Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and that accentuate your features.

8. Block out negative social and media messages concerning body image.

9. Celebrate being YOU!!! No one can do You quite like YOU!

10. Use the time and energy that you might have spent worrying about food, calories, and your weight to do something to help others! This is good for the mind, body and soul!

Proper Style begins on the inside! Once we rewire the way you think and see yourself, then we can work on your personal style. I know….seems easier said than done. Message me and I’ll give you the name of a great therapist ;)!

So, let’s get to work….

B. Blessed!
