thredUP

I have a new found love for ThredUP. Have you ever heard of it? It’s amazing. Online consignment store extraordinaire! This website was created so that consumers like you and me can buy and sell pre-loved clothing and accessories. ThredUP offers over 25,000 brands  for women, children and teens at over 90% off of retail.

I know what you’re thinking…..Do they really have the brands I love? How’s the quality? What about higher end labels, do they offer them? The answers to those questions are… Yes, they have your fave brands, the standard of quality is exceptional, they disclose any imperfections up front and they carry labels like Target, Tory Burch and everything in-between. ThredUP makes shopping fun and easy. You can even shop on your phone using their app. It’s simple, easy and fun!

I recently found some great pieces for myself and my littles! And guess what? This mommy didn’t break the bank! You can see our fabulous finds in the video above.

I adore a great chunky sweater and skirt combo! So festive and cozy.  Shopping for your kids is even fun. No long lines, no fussy babies to juggle, no traffic….you can literally sit in your pjs while the kids play and shop! You can find dresses like Stella’s and add all the accessories your little heart desires. I love buying Ralph Lauren for Liam and you can find some great pieces like the ones he is wearing at really fantastic prices. One of my absolute favorite designers is Rachel Zoe! I literally want every single piece in her clothing line. Guess who scored this cute little number by her fave designer? I did!!! I did a simple search for Rachel Zoe on the ThredUP app. Much to my surprise, there were several items available. I decided on this dress and it went from shopping cart to my closet. I could not wait for it to arrive! You guys, I landed the first item of my Rachel Zoe collection. I adore a little black dress. I mean, who doesn’t? This dress is begging me to wear it to a holiday party!!

If shopping consignment has you feeling a bit overwhelmed check out my tips below!

The thrill of the hunt, the anticipation of what could be, my favorite designer labels at prices I can actually afford and the opportunity to allow my creative fashion juices to flow freely! Thrifting can be the most exhilarating roller coaster ride of emotions!

Here are my top 10 thrifting tips:

1. The closet audit. It’s important to know exactly whats in that beautiful abyss of space in which your fave threads live! Otherwise, you will continue to buy the same comfy tee but, in 11 different versions. I keep an ongoing list of items I want and items I need. This helps to keep your impulse buys at bay. The natural response to those amazing prices is to fill up your cart with items you may not need. Just because “it’s a great deal” does not mean it’s a great deal for YOU. Is it really a great deal if you don’t need it, probably will never wear it and already have similar items in your closet? Focus! We are on a mission to save money, upgrade and diversify your wardrobe.

2. Hunt for quality brands and fabrics. Keep a mental list of your favorite designers and keep a lookout for those labels. For example, if I am shopping on my thredUP app I will search for items from my must have designers and cross every possible body part that I will find the perfect items. When thrifting, higher end labels and fabrics will stand the test of time. Natural fabrics will look and wear better over time. Seek out cotton, cotton blends, linens and leather. I always prefer quality over quantity.

3. Shop according to trends. Check out the runways for seasonal trends and inspiration.

4. DIY Up Do. If an item you have your sights set on is a must have but, has seen better days determine if you can repair or give it new life. I love a good DIY challenge. If clothing has pilling there is a simple fix. Use a clean razor and with a gentle hand draw the razor down in the direction of the fabric’s weave for easy removal. Holes are an easy fix with a needle and thread. If embellishments look warn you may either remove them completely or use your creative ideas to add to them! The key is to think outside of the box!

5. Get a great tailor! Whether clothes are new or pre-loved the fit of the item is everything. Chances are second hand clothes are not going to fit like a glove. Sometimes, it’s hard to pass up a designer deal because the hem is a little long. No biggie! Snag that amazing find and use some of the money you saved on the item to have it tailor made to fit your body. If you’re really adventurous grab a needle and thread, watch a youtube video on how to hem a dress and learn some valuable new tricks. Don’t be afraid of a little hemming. Collars can be removed, pants can become shorts and a waist can be cinched with a belt.

6. Challenge yourself. If you see a pattern or texture that catches your attention, don’t prejudge it. Let your creativity take flight and imagine all of the possibilities within. Maybe you really love a dress but would rather it be a skirt. Not a problem! Add a tee over the dress, tie a little knot on the side and bam! Your dress/skirt challenge is solved with a little imagination and a comfy tee.

7. Stock up on jewelry and accessories. These items have been gently loved but usually have so much life left to live. Jewelry usually shows very little wear. It’s also the easiest way to take an outfit from day to night or from casual to fancy. Never underestimate the power of a pre-loved strand of pearls. I mean, have you seen what an amazing set of pearls can do for a silky top and pajama pants? Two words….Carrie Bradshaw!

8. Location, location, location. Cruising on line makes thrifting easy but, if you’re out and about make sure you are hitting up the best spots. Affluent areas of town always make for great finds. When traveling you definitely need to find thrift and antique stores as you cruise through those quant little towns.

9. Put on your detective hat. Check to see if you are indeed getting a deal. If possible, search for the item in question on line to see what others are paying. It’s easy for our feelings to take the thrifting wheel and steer us in the wrong directions.

10. Leave with what you LOVE! You know what I’m talking about. The can’t wait to get to the register with your find so, you power walk like an 80’s work out video…kind of LOVE. The change in the car while at a red light because you can not live through another moment without it on your body….kind of LOVE. The same LOVE that has you walking down the street as if you are in slow motion with a wind machine blowing your hair and breezing through the layers of your perfectly drapey, gently pre-loved floral dress.

Thank You For Your Service…

Thank-You-For-Your-Service-Movie-Trailer-Miles

Thank You For Your Service

This film tells the story of an amazing soldier and hero named Adam Schumann who bravely served our country. His story, like many others is one of bravery, heart break, sacrifice, loyalty and resilience…which EVERYONE needs to hear and see. TYFYS is based on the best selling book by American Journalist David Finkel who spent countless days with Adam and his family. Writer and director Jason Hall gives us a very real sense of what our soldiers experience while serving our country and the struggles of integrating back into family and civilian life. He does not shy away from the real issues our service members and their families experience. Jason takes you into the intimate moments shared between Adam and the men he served alongside. We get a glimpse into their experiences and memories of war, how they struggle to leave the war behind and the challenges they face as they integrate back into their civilian roles as husband, father, son, and friend. Moments like these are not easily talked about or shared with the general public. Our eyes are opened to PTSD and the very real challenges our service members and their families face in getting the medical assistance they need.

As a family of story tellers, we were really drawn to this script. We audition for things all of the time but this story was different….special and necessary. Stella began the auditioning process when she was four. I remember her auditions vividly. Of course I was a proud mom but, this opportunity felt different. My husband and I have family who were and are service members and have many friends who’s have walked similar journey’s. I will never forget when our agent called with the exciting news that our little family had prayed for! When I heard the words, “Stella was chosen to play Zoe,” it felt like my heart stopped for a moment. I was overcome with gratitude. Not because Stella had received a big booking….although that is exciting….but, because I knew Adam’s story and this film would change so many lives. We want everyone we know to see this film.

Thank You For Your Service opened on October 27th and we have already seen first hand the impact it has had on so many. I have received messages from military wives and service members who have shared their heart breaking stories that are very similar to Adam Schumann’s. War has a very real and at times devastating impact on our military and the families who support them. My hope is that you will see this film, your eyes will be opened to the challenges our service members face and that you will feel a call to action. The systems set in place to “care” for our military are flawed. Many service members do not receive the care and help they need. BUT, we can change this….we have to change this. It will take some time for our government to repair this flawed system but, David Finkel, Jason Hall and Adam Schumann have already began that uphill battle by bringing these issues to light.  What you can do in the mean time is show immense, true and heart felt gratitude to the men and women who serve our country.  Offer your friends and family who have served a safe place to land, open the door to conversations and offer them unconditional love and support.

Let the next time you say “Thank you for your service” be different. May it be said with a deeper knowledge of their sacrifices.

Schumann-362x320

This is Adam Schumann….Hero, Veteran, Husband, Father, Son, and Friend.

Thank You Adam Schumann for your bravery and sacrifice. Thank you for sharing your story in the most meaningful and honest way. Thank you to your wife Saskia and your children. Thank you….it will never seem like enough but, Thank You!

While this subject matter is very serious, let me tell you that our time spent on set with these amazing people has forever changed us! Stella had the most fun with Jason, “Mr. Miles and Ms. Haley” (Miles Teller and Haley Bennett). We finally met Adam at the movie premiere. I still do not have adequate words to describe him. He is amazing and every synonym that goes along with that word. We also had the pleasure of meeting the men Adam served with. Trust me when I say….their stories are real and true. These people are extraordinary.

Making movies is all sorts of fun! Making a movie that changes lives is the reason we became actors.

A big thank you to TuTu Du Monde for dressing Stella. She felt like a star!

Making time for self care….

_DSC4685.E

Can I be honest? Fitting in workouts has been the biggest challenge for me! I have a nasty habit of putting my needs on the back burner. Raise your hand if you can relate!! I run around making sure everyone else’s needs are met and allow myself to have the left overs. I recently saw a meme that said, “My kids look like they stepped out of a GAP ad and I look like I stepped out of an episode of the Walking Dead!” It’s funny and it was true!

You guys, I know better! Self care is a must. It’s important to take care of your soul, mind and body. Without getting too deep….I had to really look at how I viewed myself. Why do I insist on the best for my husband and kids but, not for myself? I felt the rumblings of change beginning to happen. You know the feeling, God starts stirring up things he wants to change in you. It hurts but, it’s necessary.  After some much needed time with my Creator and acknowledging deeply rooted “I am not enough” insecurities, I focused my attention on self care and self love.

I came up with 3 things I must do daily to care for myself.

That seems easy enough, right?

  1. Nurture my relationship with God through meditation, reading and prayer.
  2. Center my attention on Thankfulness.
  3. Care for my body through nutrition and exercise.

I have so much to say about all of these areas and I promise I will share more!

But…..

 _DSC4456.E

Let’s chat fitness!

Your body needs to move! When you work out your body produces endorphins. The link between exercise and mood is pretty strong! I start to feel a shift in my mood fairly soon after I begin….it’s getting myself going that is the struggle.

_DSC4368.E

Never enough time! I am eyelash deep in babies, house cleaning, memorizing scripts and the countless other things that seem to creep in and takeover my day. I often feel like I don’t have time and the time that I do have I want to throw myself into a comfy bed and sleep. And, sometimes you need to indulge and do just that. But, I am in control of my day and if I want to see change I have to chisel out time. The first few days of my self care journey were filled with half attempts at failed workouts. I definitely try to be gentle with myself and extend grace. What I found that keeps me accountable is setting health goals and remembering why I need to be fit and healthy….my family! So, I fit my work outs into the nooks and crannies.

_DSC4399.E

My babies are always with me so, naturally I came up with ways to include them in my work out!  We make it fun and easy. I love that it introduces fitness to them at a young age. When they understand that I want to keep my body healthy and in shape, it motivates them to be healthy too!

When we work out together I do things that they love like kicking the ball and tag.  I also introduce a few exercises that their little bodies can handle. I am not going to lie, it’s pretty cute watching them attempt burpees. I am sure the added laughter increases the amount of calories burned, right?

Here are a few exercises we like to do together!

  1. Planks
  2. Squats
  3. Push-ups
  4. Lunges
  5. Burpees
  6. Leg raises
  7. High Knees

_DSC4368.E

And…..we run! My favorite Jogging Stroller is the Joovy Zoom 360. It’s lightweight, comfy and easy to maneuver. Seriously, this stroller has the most amazing ability to go over any terrain and make smooth turns. I actually prefer this stroller whenever we are cruising around town running errands! Thank you to Joovy for allowing me the ease of running with a great stroller!

_DSC4468.E

You can get your Joovy Zoom for under $220 here! Its Properly Stylish and affordable! Definitely a mommy must have!!

_DSC4503.E

To make sure my body is getting all of the nourishment it needs I follow a healthy diet and take Plexus’ plant based supplements. Don’t worry, I will fill you in on all of the details. I love veggies and Plexus! Both have changed my health game!

_DSC4737.E

Nothing motivates me more than my babies! If you need inspiration, look at the faces of your loved ones.

I hope my journey with self care will inspire you to take time for yourself. You are worth it! Both you and your family deserves to have the best version of “YOU.”

Be gentle and extend yourself a healthy serving of grace. Workouts don’t have to be perfect and you do not have to have a gym membership to exercise. Work with what you have, love on your family and get that body moving!

XO,

Wendy Wynne

What Burning Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Taught Me….

Today was one of those days in motherhood that was just down right hard. Momma’s, I know you all have had those days!

Months and months of sleepless nights have piled up. My baby is struggling through teething and I hate to see him in so much pain! Let’s be honest, shards of bone breaking through tender flesh is not fun for anyone!! Today, I had moments where I lost my patience and used an unkind and unwarranted tone with my sweet babies.  I burned the grilled cheese sandwiches while I was trying to console an over tired, teething baby.  My perfectionistic tendencies really took a blow…..I DO NOT Burn food! Of course this wasted 4 pieces of bread and 3 slices of cheese, not to mention what little energy reserves I was using.

These were not my most Properly Stylish moments but, they happened.

gc2

It’s funny how burning a grilled cheese sandwich can send you into a self deprecating tail spin of feeling inadequate. I immediately began to see all of the ways that I do not measure up as a mother and wife.  As I was spiraling  out of control in my thoughts, Stella was encouraging me in her sweet little way.

Stella : “Oh mom, you burned the grilled cheese. It’s ok! You can make another and next time turn the fire down and watch it very closely. Wow! My tummy is growling so loudly…I must be realllllllly hungry.”

I both laughed and cried listening to her. I took a deep breath, told myself “I AM enough,” and began to prepare the second round of sandwiches.

As women, we are often times juggling many responsibilities and trying to excel at every one. We leave very little room for failure or acting in any way that is less than perfect. The truth of the matter is that none of us are perfect and never will be! It’s an unattainable trait that we try so desperately to achieve. I would never want Stella or Liam to feel the pressure to be perfect in anything they do. As a matter of fact, I tell Stella very often that her best efforts are enough and she never has to feel like she has to be “perfect.”

Parenting can be the best teacher and failing can be one of the greatest gifts! Both require us to strive to be the best version of ourselves!

With both babes on my lap, I apologized for losing my patience and burning the grilled cheese sandwiches. Stella immediately said those beautiful words that set us free and give us room to grow, “I FORGIVE YOU mommy and I LOVE YOU even though you burned the grilled cheese!” Forgiveness is such a beautiful gift!  All was well!

As I prepared the second batch of sandwiches with a crying babe on my hip, I gave myself permission to fail. I gave myself permission to have a less than spotless home, to sleep in my makeup and have messy hair, to not always have the perfect meals prepared with the best ingredients, and to fail without it defining who I am.

I want to be a positive example for my babies. I realized that striving for perfection does not set a realistic example for them. Thank you God for grace and forgiveness!

What truly matters is that my family feels and sees the love I have for them.

Even though I am enormously flawed, I am enough in this moment!

I hope my challenging day encourages you! You are doing a wonderful job and you are so loved!

Lunch may have started black, crusty and undesirable but it ended up pretty fantastic! Oh the lessons we learn!

gc

Failing can be Properly Stylish….as long as you give your best efforts and learn from your mistakes!

Take care of yourselves and love yourself well…..that is Properly Stylish!

XOXO,

Wendy

Fall and Pumpkin Patches…

It’s finally fall here in Atlanta…..well, kind of. There are still a few days where the temperature sneaks into the 80’s. Gotta love those southern seasons!

Anyone who knows me, knows of my love for the holiday seasons! I mean, I am seriously ready to put up the Christmas tree and it is only the middle of October! I love all of those warm fuzzies that come along with holidays.

This year we have been to both an apple orchard and a pumpkin farm.

Burt’s Pumpkin Farm in Dawsonville, GA is my absolute favorite! It has become a yearly fall tradition for my little family. It is about an hour drive through the most beautiful landscape. Farm land, cows, horses and little antique shops guide you all the way to the farm.

The pumpkins at Burt’s are amazing! There are hay rides and yummy eats to enjoy. They also have a little country store where I have been known to pick up a few jars of the most delicious Apple Butter. You must buy the Apple Butter!!

_dsc0386

_dsc0344

These baby pumpkins are always a favorite of Stella’s. She takes in every detail before selecting the perfect one….just like her momma.

_dsc0347_dsc0363-e

My sweet Stella pondered long and hard over which baby pumpkin was chosen to come home with us. She’s my detailed girl and I love that about her!

_dsc0376-e

Liam took the pick it up and throw it approach. My propriety was kicking in hard as I apologized to other farm goers for the flying pumpkins. 🙂

_dsc0379-e_dsc0446-e

Man, I love watching this little one explore!

_dsc0487-e

Have you noticed Stella and Liam’s sweet little pumpkin monogrammed shirts? I absolutely love them! They are perfect for the fall season! Jennifer at Plum Happy is responsible for all of this cuteness! http://www.facebook.com/plumhappyclothing

_dsc0411

You guys, my heart breaks a little with each passing day as this amazing little lady grows older! She is growing into such a wonderful person. Her heart explodes with joy, love and compassion. I’m so happy she is mine!

_dsc0689-e

I love this shot of me and my little honey!

_dsc0601

You guys, the pumpkins at Burt’s are the size of small children. It’s pretty spectacular!

_dsc0270-e_dsc0559-e

We love visiting Burt’s Pumpkin Farm!

Fall-in Love….

I am not sure about you guys, but I am ready to say goodbye  to 90 degree weather and hello to crisp air, layered clothing, pumpkin everything and football!! Our summer has been so wonderful! However, I can’t help but long for the holiday season!!

So, let’s look forward to some of my favorite wearable Fall Trends…..

fashion-2016-02-01-fall-fashion-trend-2016-pumpkin-spice-trend-main

Pumpkin Spice

Ahhhhhhh Pumpkin Spice! Just give me pumpkin everything!!! Don’t you adore this color? The fact that it’s an actual fall trend and not just the yummiest hot beverage you can order at Starbucks, gets my juices flowing!!

This muted color was seen all over the runways. It’s a very flattering color and goes well with most skin tones!

Bohemian Chic

http://bit.ly/2b9U2sT

Boho-Chic is the way to go this fall! I love an “all you can eat” dress! What a multi-purpose garment! These dresses leave you feeling chic, comfy and allow you to eat as much chocolate has your little heart desires! Asos.com has some of the best maxi dresses at really affordable prices. The white beauty is gorgeous and she is a steal at $78!

Style Tip…..Add a chunky sweater or a faux leather jacket and your fave fall boots!

image4xxl-2

Not just Denim….Reconstructed Denim

Dust off those distressed jeans of the 90’s because they are making a comeback! It’s no surprise that denim was seen all over the runways for fall. Everyone loves denim!

Plaid and Suiting

I’m kind of in love with this trend! We finally have permission from the fashion gods to pile on the plaid. I love pairing a simple plaid with a bold plaid. Yassssssss!

CAPES!! Give me all of the CAPES!!!!!!

This is my favorite trend! You can wear a cape with just about any outfit and it increases the glamour factor dramatically.

Okay, are you ready to shop? I know I am!

A word of caution….Don’t feel overwhelmed! Anyone can sport these fashion trends! You don’t have to have a large clothing budget to look like you have a large clothing budget! 🙂 My favorite places to shop are thrift stores and discount stores such as Marshalls and TJ Maxx.

tjx

http://bit.ly/2bAgD4H

Did you know you can shop TJ Maxx online? Just found these beauties for $49! I have the perfect spot in my closet for them! 🙂

I hope you are feeling inspired and ready for fall!!

XOXO,

Wendy

Oh The Places We Will Go….In ATL

Hi fellow Properly Stylish people! These summer days are flying by and I can barely keep up! We have been busy with having as much fun as possible before the school year begins. I am always on the lookout for fun family outings! My favorite spots are those that offer both a fun experience and a learning experience.

I think we have found that perfect combo in the Children’s Museum of Atlanta.

FullSizeRender

I will be honest the drive to the museum was less than Properly Stylish. Liam is teething and boy has he had a tough time! The last place he wanted to be was in a car seat for a 45 minute drive!

atlkids

Poor little lamb! Moving from car seat to stroller did not help matters! And so the adventure to the Children’s Museum begins! Don’t worry, he stopped crying as soon as we walked through those doors!

2-2

Seriously! Look at this place!! How in the world could you be sad with all of the fun adventures you can have here?

fishing1

Look at these faces…..Pure joy! It was Stella and Liam’s first fishing experience and they loved every second! They splashed around and yes, they got wet!! It was wonderful to let them enjoy getting messy as they explored!

fishing2

Liam absolutely loves water! He would have gone for a swim if I would have allowed him. 🙂

Cm grocery.jpg

The next spot we visited was the mini grocery store! Not only is it adorable, but it teaches the benefits of having fresh and healthy food from Farm to Table!

grocery1

As you can see, Liam loves his fresh veggies. Stella, on the other hand is a little more selective with her food choices.

cow1

She may have a particular palate but the girl can milk a cow like a boss! I loved this area so much! She actually learned how to milk a cow!!

cow2

I try to explain where our food comes from to my kiddos. Today, it finally clicked! Milking this cow brought up a bunch of new topics to talk about. “Mom, why do we drink cows milk when you make Momma’s Milk? Wait, is the chicken sandwich from Chick Fil A a real chicken? (insert her sad face)” Good questions sweet girl! We will save those questions for another blog post. 🙂

IMG_9353

Liam loved this life size tractor so much! He was definitely in his happy place! Can you tell he has totally skipped his morning nap at this point?

I really believe Stella could have stayed and painted for days! She loved this painting station!

This may have been one of my favorite moments of the day! Stella was using “The Force” to open the elevators. Haha!!

There were so many fun activities and learning centers! There were crafting rooms and party rooms. The science center was mind blowing! We even were able to enjoy our snacks upstairs and chat about all of our favorite learning centers. My mommy-heart was bursting!

I have to mention the nursing mothers room! You guys, it was so wonderful to have a place to nurse Liam and allow him to have a few quiet moments! All of the excitement can be very stimulating.

We love the Children’s Museum of Atlanta and we had such a wonderful time learning while playing! Planning our next visit is already under way.

IMG_9388

Hands on learning is definitely Properly Stylish!

XOXO,

Wendy
